Course Summary

The course is a basic introduction to personnel / HR management covering a range of traditional personnel activities in a practical way. All participants need to become Member of the CIPD at the beginning of the course. 

This study programme leads to the Certificate in Personnel Practice awarded by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), the recognized professional body of Personnel and Human Resource practitioners. The Certificate is a widely recognized professional qualification. It is aimed at those who have been given, or are about to be given, personnel responsibilities in their organization, or for those who aspire to such a position. Preferably, entrants should be supported by their employers so that assessed practical experience and project work can be undertaken in their own organization.

The CIPD Certificate in Personnel Practice is a foundation level standard, at an equivalent level to NVQ/SVQ Level 3.

There are now two methods of studying for the CIPD Certificate in Personnel Practice:

1. The flexible Modular programme - ideal for professionals with limited knowledge or experience in personnel and wishing to acquire a wide range of relevant, practical skills

2. The Fast-track programme - designed for professionals with more substantial knowledge and experience and wishing to complete the programme within a shorter timeframe.

Objectives of this course 

This programme will suit:

  • Those who are working in human resources and wish to fine tune and enhance their existing skills and knowledge.  Participants will be able to compare their current work with theory and best practice
  • Anyone working at the level of personnel assistant, personnel administrator or personnel officer, whose role is to provide support for key aspects of the personnel function
  • someone new to, or aspiring to, a career in the personnel function
  • line managers, supervisors or team leaders who wish to gain the same level of personnel skills as practitioners at this level
  • The person who has just joined a human resource department in an administrative role and want to have a firm foundation of knowledge and skills so that they can progress
  • Who work for a small organization without a human resource function and they have the responsibility for HR.  They need to ensure that what they do is correct and complies with legislation and best practice.
  • Who are a training specialist and wish to broaden their skill set to enhance their career prospects.

All CIPD certificate - level qualifications cover certain knowledge, skills and competencies.

Communication

Candidates must demonstrate that they are able to:

• write a report
• obtain information by interview
• give and receive feedback on behavior and performance
• build relationships with others.

They must also demonstrate interpersonal skills such as listening, conveying information, responding to questions, etc.

Self-management (improving own learning and performance)

Candidates must demonstrate that they are able to:

- set personal objectives
- appraise their own performance
- reflect on their own practices for the purposes of learning and improvement
- maintain a personal development plan.

Understanding the work context

Candidates must demonstrate that they are able to:

• plan and administer resources
• contribute to the interpretation of personnel information.
They must also demonstrate that they understand and can explain:
• the corporate environment
• factors affecting individual performance (e.g systems, relationships, performance criteria, motivation and reward)
• performance management process and its rationale
• employment relationships
• roles in relation to personnel and development (ie training, personnel and line management)
• the concept of contribution to organisational success.

Relevant legislation

Candidates must demonstrate a broad understanding of, and be able to explain, relevant legislation.

How to gain the Certificate?
To be awarded the Certificate, students must:

attend either the face-to-face modules
complete four assessed assignments, two skills-based and two written
complete an assessed project including a project proposal and written report
complete self-study materials
maintain a personal development portfolio that demonstrates a satisfactory level of learning and understanding.


How long does it take to complete?

This modular programme is extremely flexible. Participants are required to complete it within a maximum duration of two years, although you can complete it in a considerably shorter timeframe.
